Newsletter Strategy & Audience Engagement
Designed and launched an organization’s first newsletter program, creating a sustainable channel for ongoing audience engagement without paid promotion. This project highlights my ability to build lifecycle engagement systems from scratch—combining strategy, execution, and measurement to create durable communications infrastructure.
Context & Goals
There was no existing newsletter program or defined email engagement strategy. The goal was to build a repeatable, low-lift system for sharing research and campaign updates with a highly specialized audience.
My Role
- Editorial strategy and content planning
- Newsletter design and iteration
- Workflow and automation setup
- Performance tracking and optimization
- Re-engagement improvements
Design & Iteration
The newsletter design evolved over time to improve readability and engagement, informed by performance data and audience behavior.
Starting a newsletter can be daunting. But we knew our content was valuable to our audiences, we so focused on making it happen, rather than perfect. We used a simple design based on our standard external email layout, and this helped us get the newsletter up and running within a matter of weeks, not months.
As our process improved we explored different design options. We landed on a clean, simple layout that was more visually engaging without looking cluttered or distracting from the content itself.
Results
Following the launch of the newsletter, traffic originating from email grew from 1.25% to 4.05% of total site traffic, with sessions increasing from 1,016 to 6,436 and active users from 646 to 4,074. This growth was achieved entirely through organic subscriptions, without paid promotion or external acquisition campaigns beyond an on-site sign-up form.

- Established a sustainable editorial workflow
